Inventory signal trees that survive partial feeds
Inventory visibility collapses when teams average unequal signals. A WMS cycle count from this morning is not the same evidence as a carrier’s estimated pieces on a trailer still two days out. Signal trees make that inequality explicit.
Root, branch, leaf
At the root, pick the decision the number must support — promise dates, replenishment, or financial inventory. Branches hold source classes: confirmed on-hand, in-transit confirmed, in-transit estimated, and reserved. Leaves are the individual feeds with freshness stamps and confidence notes.
When a branch loses a feed, the tree still reports the remaining branches with a confidence drop instead of inventing a blended “truth”. Planners learn to read the confidence label as part of the number.
A small implementation tip
Store freshness and source class as first-class fields next to quantity. Many BI models bury them in footnotes. In our Exception Narrative Studio, learners must cite the branch they used before proposing an action — a habit that reduces overconfident stock moves.
